Let’s not wait… welcome Ilya Golitsyn and his talk ‘Horizon: Zero Dawn: Tribes Design’. If some of you are not aware of this game here is a bit intro: Horizon: Zero Dawn is an open-world action role-playing video game developed by Guerrilla Games. It’s rich with the beauty of nature but inhabited by highly advanced machines. During this session you’ll understand Guerrilla Games approach to the character design in the context of world building for Horizon Zero Dawn.
Human societies in Horizon: Zero Dawn are organized in the form of tribes. You can look at all tribal cultures that exist in our history and see that their clothes, decorations are the expression of the world and environment they live in. The same is here. The tribes of Horizon: Zero Dawn, the way they look, have some similarities with their world and creatures/machines.
There are lots of details, for instance, the Banuk tribe uses, geometric designs on the canvas used for shelters, and some shamans even have machine parts sown directly into their skin. And Ilya is going to unravel you these secrets and challenges of tribes design.
Ilya Golitsyn was a self-learned artist, he didn’t consider his hobby a potential career at first. After graduating university, he decided to pursue his passion for art and games professionally. As a senior character concept artist at Guerrilla Games, Ilya Golitsyn is responsible for the visual language and style of various tribes, as well as several main character designs for Horizon: Zero Dawn.
