First keynote: Creating quests in the open world of Horizon: Zero Dawn

Now we can unravel our first keynote speaker – Leszek Szczepański and his talk on ‘Creating quests in the open world of Horizon: Zero Dawn’. Horizon: Zero Dawn is an open-world action role-playing video game developed by Guerrilla Games. The game has uncannily gorgeous look with its hyper-realism that can totally blow away everyone who even just watches a trailer.

In fact, Guerrilla Games has never developed RPG before. The large open-world of Horizon: Zero Dawn required a system that would allow to create a non-linear quests. Therefore, they ranked the quest systems of other RPGs to compare the solutions.

This talk will go into detail on how the team actually managed to make quests with branching storylines. The speaker will also describe advantages and disadvantages of the chosen approaches.

Leszek Szczepański is a gameplay programmer at Guerrilla Games company. He started his career when he was at high-school, making mods for RPGs. Later, he worked as a professional game master, plus, he was a programmer/designer at Playsoft company, where he worked on over 20 titles, including Metal Gear Acid 2 Mobile, The Sims 2: Castaway, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
