TIPS & TRICKS

👠 Madeira is known for its steep streets and traditional cobblestone pavements, especially in the Old Town of Funchal. Comfortable shoes are highly recommended.

💬 The official language is Portuguese, but English is widely spoken, particularly in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.

💶 Portugal uses the Euro. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, though it’s always handy to carry some cash for small cafés or local markets. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Leaving around 5-10% for good service in restaurants is common practice.

🛍️ Most shops are open Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, shopping centres may operate with limited hours, while smaller local shops often close. Restaurants and cafés remain open, especially in tourist zones.

🔌 Portugal uses the European standard plug sockets (Type C & F) with 230V voltage.

🌤️ Madeira is called the “Island of Eternal Spring” for a reason – the weather is mild year-round, but conditions can change quickly. Bring a light jacket, a small umbrella just in case, and don’t forget your swimsuit – you might want to jump into the ocean or hotel pool.

🚕 Bolt taxi app operates across the island. If you want to explore beyond the city, renting a car is highly recommended – some of the island’s most beautiful spots are best reached by car.

🚰 Tap water is safe to drink. If buying bottled water, look for “sem gás” (still) or “com gás” (sparkling).

🌸 Madeira’s Flower Festival is a must-see in May. This vibrant celebration of flowers, parades, and colourful displays transforms the island into a botanical wonderland every spring. It’s a fantastic way to experience local traditions and beauty.

We recommend visiting the official Madeira tourism website to explore museums, hiking routes, and hidden gems across the island.
